Self-leveling concrete and resurfacer calculator

Enter the floor area, the average depth and the product to see how many bags to buy. Measure depth in several spots — floors are rarely out by the same amount everywhere.

How we got this

10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft × 0.25 in + 10% = 2.29 cu ft

÷ 0.45 cu ft per bag = 6 bags (one bag covers 21.6 sq ft at this depth)

  • Prime the floor with the maker’s primer, dam doorways and drains, and mix full bags with measured water: self-levelers flow only at the right consistency.

Self-levelers and resurfacers are sold by the bag with a coverage at a stated thickness. Quikrete’s Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer, for example, yields about 0.45 cu ft per 50 lb bag, which covers about 21 sq ft at ¼ in. Coverage halves every time the depth doubles, so measure carefully: the depth you guess is the biggest error in the count.

bags = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 × (1 + extra) ÷ bag yield (cu ft)
one bag covers = bag yield ÷ (depth ÷ 12)

Measuring an uneven floor

Lay a long straightedge across the floor in a grid and measure the gap under it every couple of feet. Average the readings for the depth. If one corner is ¾ in low and the rest is flat, work out that area separately — it may need a deeper-rated product or a patch first.

Tips

  • Prime first with the maker’s primer; without it the floor can suck water out of the leveler and cause pinholes or poor bond.
  • Dam doorways and seal cracks so the liquid doesn’t run away under walls or down drains.
  • Work fast with a helper: one mixing, one pouring and spreading. Self-levelers set quickly.
  • Use spiked shoes to walk into wet leveler without leaving marks.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a bag of self-leveling concrete cover?

About 21 sq ft at ¼ in for a 50 lb bag of Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer, 42 at ⅛ in and about 13 at ⅜ in. Other brands differ — read the bag.

How much does a bag of Re-Cap cover?

Quikrete says a 40 lb bag of Re-Cap covers about 16 sq ft at ¼ in, or about 65 sq ft at 1/16 in.

Can I pour self-leveler thicker than the label says?

Not in one pour. Each product has a maximum depth on its data sheet; deeper fills need a product rated for it, or a fill of sand/topping or concrete first.
