Quick answers for common sizes
| Example | Answer |
|---|---|
| How much does #4 rebar weigh per foot | 0.668 lb per foot (13.4 lb per 20 ft stick) |
| How much does #5 rebar weigh per foot | 1.043 lb per foot (20.9 lb per 20 ft stick) |
| How much does #3 rebar weigh per foot | 0.376 lb per foot (7.5 lb per 20 ft stick) |
Every bar size at the length and count above
| Bar size | Total weight | Nominal diameter |
|---|---|---|
| #3 | 7.5 lb | 0.375 in |
| #4 | 13.4 lb | 0.5 in |
| #5 | 20.9 lb | 0.625 in |
| #6 | 30 lb | 0.75 in |
| #7 | 40.9 lb | 0.875 in |
| #8 | 53.4 lb | 1 in |
Reinforcing bar is sized by number. In the US system the number is the diameter in eighths of an inch — a #4 bar is 4/8 = ½ in, a #5 is ⅝ in — up to #8 (1 in). Weights and areas are standardized under ASTM A615, so a #4 bar weighs 0.668 lb per foot whichever mill made it.

The metric sizes (#10, #13, #16…) are soft conversions of the same bars — the number is the nominal diameter in millimetres, rounded. A #13 bar is a #4 bar. The sizes chart with uses and notes is on rebar sizes chart.
Worked examples
- How much does #4 rebar weigh per foot — the most common bar in residential slabs and footings.
- How much does #5 rebar weigh per foot — footings, walls and heavier slabs.
- How much does #3 rebar weigh per foot — light slabs, sidewalks and ties.
Why the weight matters
Steel suppliers often price by weight, trucks and trailers have payload limits, and a bundle of bars can be heavier than it looks. Fifty 20 ft sticks of #5 is over half a ton. Bar size and spacing are structural choices from your plans; the rebar calculator counts the bars for a slab grid.
What you’ll need
- Rebar cutter and benderMid-range price
Cuts and bends #3–#5 bar by hand. For a few cuts, a grinder or reciprocating saw with the right blade also works.

Ties bars together where they cross so the grid stays put while you pour.

Hold rebar or mesh off the ground so it ends up inside the concrete, not under it. Match the chair height to where your plans place the steel.

Frequently asked questions
How much does #6 rebar weigh per foot?
1.502 lb per foot (2.235 kg/m), so a 20 ft stick weighs about 30 lb.
What does the number on rebar mean?
In US sizes it is the diameter in eighths of an inch: #3 = ⅜ in, #4 = ½ in, #5 = ⅝ in. Above #8 the bars are slightly larger than the number suggests (#9 is 1.128 in) so that their areas come out round.
How many sticks of rebar are in a ton?
For 20 ft sticks: about 150 of #4 (13.4 lb each), 96 of #5 or 67 of #6, by weight alone.
